Is affective computing an oxymoron?

چکیده

In one of the Father Brown short-stories, G.K. Chesterton described the (fictitious) French detective Aristide Valentin by writing that ‘‘(h)e was not ‘a thinking machine’; for that is a brainless phrase of modern fatalism and materialism. A machine only is a machine because it cannot think.’’ Although this aphorism dates from 1911, long before the notion of a thinking machine became popular, it is still applicable today. Despite nearly 50 years of attempts to create artificial or machine intelligence, we know that machines cannot think in any reasonable sense of the word. Fortunately, this has few if any consequences for the practical use of the research results, which without a doubt have been significant. If we consider the term ‘‘affective computing’’ in the spirit of Chesterton, it is tempting to consider it as a contemporary example of a ‘‘brainless phrase’’—one of several, actually. There are two main reasons for that. One is that computing by its very nature cannot be affective. The second is that affective computing should refer to a specific use of computing rather than a specific type of computing. There is, of course, no denying that computing and affects can co-exist. According to the dictionary, the word affective means relating to, arising from, or influencing feelings or emotions. Computers and computing may easily create an emotional response or an affective state in their users, although this mostly happens when the technology does not function as promised or as the user thought—or hoped—it would. The issue of affective computing is, however, not whether computing and affects can occur simultaneously in different agents but whether computing itself can be affective.

Oxymoron: Making Fine-Grained Memory Randomization Practical by Allowing Code Sharing

The latest effective defense against code reuse attacks is fine-grained, per-process memory randomization. However, such process randomization prevents code sharing since there is no longer any identical code to share between processes. Without shared libraries, however, tremendous memory savings are forfeit. This drawback may hinder the adoption of fine-grained memory randomization. We present...
